Does this sound familiar?

Maybe you've already seen your gastroenterologist. Perhaps you've tried an elimination diet, probiotics, or a low-FODMAP plan. You might have gotten a diagnosis — or maybe you haven't, and that's its own kind of frustrating.

Either way, you're still dealing with the bloating, the unpredictability, the food anxiety, or the fatigue that comes with a gut that won't settle down. Or maybe unexplained inflammation has you wondering whether your gut is part of the picture. You want a plan that treats you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms to manage.

That's where acupuncture may be able to help — as a complement to the care you're already receiving.

Klara Furst, L.Ac. offers whole-person, highly individualized care to help you understand what's at the root of your symptoms.

A Time-Tested Approach Backed by Growing Research

East Asian medicine has centuries of clinical use for digestive complaints, and research is catching up to explain why — studies on IBS show acupuncture can meaningfully improve symptom severity and quality of life. Emerging research on inflammatory conditions like IBD points to real anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

East Asian Medicine Diagnostics Alongside Lab Data

Alongside traditional East Asian medicine diagnostics, Klara utilizes GI-MAP stool testing. The GI-MAP test identifies markers related to gut bacteria balance (dysbiosis), inflammation, digestive function, and intestinal permeability, which gives objective data to work from rather than relying on symptom patterns alone.

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine combined with GI-MAP testing gives you something most gut-health treatment doesn't: an individualized plan built on both centuries of clinical pattern recognition and your own lab data.

Conditions Supported

Klara Furst, L.Ac. works with the following Digestive & Gut-Related Concerns:

  • SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS-C, IBS-D)
  • IBD (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and colitis
  • Chronic bloating and abdominal distension
  • Indigestion, reflux, and heartburn
  • Constipation and diarrhea (including alternating patterns)
  • Food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances
  • Increased Intestinal Permeability (Leaky Gut Syndrome)
  • MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) and histamine intolerance

If your symptoms don't fit neatly into one of these categories, that's fine — many people arrive here without a clear diagnosis. The discovery call is a chance to talk through what you're experiencing.

  • Whole-Person, Not Just Symptom-by-Symptom

Rather than treating bloating, irregularity, or pain as separate issues, this approach looks at how sleep, stress, and nervous system regulation are connected to digestive function — because for many patients, they are.

  • Data-Informed, Not Guesswork

Alongside East Asian medicine diagnostics, Klara can incorporate GI-MAP lab testing — offered separately, when it's a good fit — to identify patterns like dysbiosis, digestive dysfunction or inflammatory markers, so treatment is targeted to what's actually showing up, not just symptom patterns

  • A Slower, More Attentive Model One patient at a Time

You have Klara's undivided attention during your session. One-hour treatments, real space to track what's changing and what isn't. That pace is intentional — it's what a nuanced, highly individualized treatment plan actually requires.

  • Works Alongside Your Medical Care

This isn't a replacement for your gastroenterologist, allergist, or GI workup — this is meant to add to your medical care, not substitute it.

Gut Health and Symptoms That Don't Look Like Gut Symptoms

You may have heard the term "leaky gut" — the more clinical term is intestinal permeability, and it's worth knowing it's not a formally recognized diagnosis in conventional medicine the way IBS or IBD are. That said, there's a real and growing body of research on intestinal permeability and gut dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria), and on how they may relate to symptoms that don't look like digestive complaints at all, including:

  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain and general inflammation
  • Sleep disruption
  • Hormonal symptoms

If your primary complaints are things like fatigue or brain fog rather than bloating or bathroom habits, and you suspect your gut may be part of the picture, that's a reasonable thing to bring to a discovery call — not a stretch. GI-MAP testing (offered separately, see above) can also help clarify whether dysbiosis or intestinal permeability markers are part of what's going on, rather than leaving it a guess.

How East Asian Medicine Approaches Digestive Health

Digestive function is associated with the Earth Element and with how the body processes not just food, but stress, worry, and overall nourishment. Rather than treating a symptom in isolation, this approach looks at digestive complaints in the context of your whole system: sleep, stress load, nervous system regulation, and long-standing patterns.

This isn't a substitute for a diagnostic workup — it's a complementary lens. Research suggests acupuncture may influence gut motility, visceral sensitivity, and the gut-brain axis via effects on the autonomic nervous system, which is part of why it's increasingly explored as a supportive therapy for functional GI conditions.

What's the Process?

  • Step 1 — Free 15-Minute Discovery Call

We talk through what you're experiencing: symptoms, history, what you've already tried, what hasn't worked. I'll tell you honestly whether I think this could help — and if it's not a good fit, I'll say so. No pressure, no commitment, just a conversation to see if working together would be a good fit.

  • Step 2 — Initial Assessment and Treatment

The New Patient Appointment is a 90 minute session that includes a thorough intake — health history, current care, and the patterns we'll be tracking together — followed by your first treatment.

  • Step 3 — A Treatment Plan Built Around You

Acupuncture is cumulative. We are asking your body to function in a new way and this takes repetition and frequent support in the early stages of a treatment plan. For most conditions, we start with 12 weeks of weekly treatments. Once things have stabilized and you are experiencing lasting relief, sessions are spaced further apart. Session frequency depends on what we're addressing and how you're responding; we'll talk through realistic timelines and what to watch for, rather than promising a fixed outcome.

  • Step 4 —Ongoing Care, at Your Pace

As things stabilize, many patients space out visits — moving from more frequent sessions to periodic maintenance. Some continue regularly; others taper off once things feel manageable. That's a conversation we have together, not a program you're locked into. Each stage of the treatment plan is individualized and customized so you have the support that's right for you.

Want More Comprehensive Support?

Working together typically starts with about a month of care to build rapport, understand your case, and make sure this approach is the right fit before deciding on next steps.

For those looking to address gut health in a more comprehensive way, a structured six-month Gut Support Program is available — highly recommended for working toward lasting relief, not just short-term symptom management.

This program includes:

  • GI-MAP stool testing to identify what's actually happening in your gut microbiome
  • In-depth analysis and explanation of your results, so you understand what's driving your symptoms
  • A personalized six-month treatment plan built around your results — herbs, supplements, nutrition, and lifestyle recommendations tailored to your case
  • Consistent acupuncture care — weekly for the first three months, then every other week for the second three — to help retrain the nervous system and support healthy vagal nerve tone, which plays a key role in digestive function
  • Ten virtual check-ins for ongoing herb, supplement, nutrition, and lifestyle support — spaced closer together at the start of the program and around key transitions in your plan
  • Guidance for maintaining your progress after the six months are complete, so relief continues long-term

This is something we can discuss together once we've had a chance to work together and determine if it's the right path for you.

A Few Common Questions

Is the discovery call actually free? Yes — 15 minutes, no cost, no obligation to book anything further.

Do I need a diagnosis before I book? No. Many people book this call before or during a diagnostic process, or after one that didn't resolve their symptoms.

Will this replace my GI doctor or specialist? No. This is meant to complement your existing medical care, not replace it.

Do I need to do GI-MAP testing to work with you? No — it's one tool Klara uses when it's a good fit, offered separately from standard sessions at an additional cost. It's something we'd discuss once we've started working together, not a requirement to book.

What if acupuncture isn't a good fit for what I'm dealing with? Klara will tell you directly on the call. The goal is an open, honest conversation, not a sale.
